Coffered Four Paneled Ceilings

A coffer refers to the appearance of a sunken panel or panels in a ceiling. Ancient architects found that coffered ceilings can mask or hide real, load-bearing beams.

Typically, in a modern home a coffered ceiling treatment is applied to give the visual appearance of coffering. Long, narrow rooms tend to be better suited for a simpler, four or five panel layout. These types of coffers are made from drywall or plaster beams. We found that plaster or drywall beams were far superior to wood beams as they do not crack due to expansion and contraction.
